Local Scientists Launch Biggest White Shark Project in California

Feb 28, 2024

A groundbreaking initiative called 'Monterey Bay White Sharks' has been launched on the Central Coast of California, marking the commencement of the largest white shark research project in the state's history. Supported by a grant from the California State, this collaborative effort involves Stanford University, UC Santa Cruz (UCSC), California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB), and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies' Center for the Blue Economy.

As part of this multi-institutional endeavor, the Monterey Bay White Shark team will utilize this funding to spearhead the development of educational materials and policy recommendations. The project aims to increase public awareness regarding the crucial role of white sharks in the region's ecosystem. By promoting respect and admiration for these apex predators, the project seeks to mitigate human-white shark interactions and cultivate a stronger conservation ethic in the renowned "Blue Serengeti" of Monterey Bay.

The Collaborative Team

The project will harness the collective expertise of researchers and experts from all participating institutions. The overarching goal of the project is to position the Monterey Bay region as a national and global model for white shark awareness and public education. Key objectives include:

  • Cultivating appreciation and reverence for white sharks

  • Enhancing public knowledge of white shark history and behavior

  • Generating support for shark conservation and protection Providing policy recommendations for local marine sanctuaries and governments

The project is currently underway and the website is projected to launch Summer 2025 and will be made freely available upon completion.
