Center for the Blue Economy

Center for the Blue Economy,

Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey

The Center for Blue Economy strives to advance robust and equitable development of the Blue Economy by providing support via economic and policy analysis. The World Bank defines the Blue Economy as: the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs, and ocean ecosystem health.

The CBE's research focuses primarily on two key areas:

1) assisting governments and organizations to quantify ocean and coastal economies to guide policy decisions, and

2) evaluating the economics of climate change adaptation and resilience in coastal regions.

While the Center examines open-ocean economic activities-e.g., renewable energy, fisheries, and shipping-the CBE devotes most of its attention to issues in coastal zones, striving to build climate resilience and support coastal communities in adapting to climate impacts.
