Environmental DNA
Scientists use environmental DNA (eDNA) to detect the presence of white sharks and other organisms by collecting water samples from their habitat and analyzing genetic material they leave behind. As white sharks shed skin cells, scales, feces, and other biological material into the water, these samples contain traces of their DNA. This non-invasive approach allows efficient surveying of large areas and monitoring of white shark populations.
